‘Excellent work,’ Cardle says, when they eventually meet up on the street corner.

‘So my “girlfriend”’ – he makes air quotes – ‘is a little fire-starter. Who’d have thought it?’

Pippa experiences a frisson of pleasure at having proved useful to the investigation. ‘Did you get enough time?’ she asks, leaning forward with her hands on her thighs to steady herself. She’s out of breath, and the adrenaline is still thundering through her body, making her feel slightly high.

‘Worked like a charm. I pulled up Tansy’s record, which dates back to 2014 and seems pretty comprehensive. Can you remember when she claimed to have lupus?’

They walk briskly along Canterbury Road, away from the Fleur de Lys clinic, and Cardle holds up his arm to hail a cab.

‘It was a couple of years ago, I think,’ Pippa says. ‘I’d have to check her website.’

‘I didn’t get long enough to read through the entries, obviously, but I took screenshots.’

A taxi pulls up, and once they’re seated in the back, Cardle starts going through the images on his phone’s camera roll. ‘It’s pretty standard stuff… mostly gynae related… contraceptive implants and so on… an inhaler for her seasonal allergies… a urinary tract infection, for which she was prescribed an antibiotic.’

‘Does it say which one?’ Pippa hangs onto the door handle as the taxi takes a sharp bend, then glances over at Cardle’s phone.

‘Says here – Bactrim. Why?’

‘Hold on a second…’ Pippa pulls out her own phone and looks on her internet browser. ‘According to several sources, Bactrim should not be prescribed to anyone who’s suffering with or has suffered from lupus.’

‘Interesting…’ Cardle turns and grins at her, before looking back at the photographed record. ‘The box for contra-indications has been left blank by the GP, as has the place where you would fill in any pre-existing conditions. Their record-keeping seems pretty meticulous, but there’s no mention at all of what constitutes a pretty serious illness. Funny that.’

‘It is.’ Pippa can hardly suppress her own smile as the taxi pulls up at their hotel. ‘It’s almost as if Tansy Dimaano never had lupus at all.’
